The carolinian forest, stretching from southwestern ontario to the carolinas in the states was once home to trees like this huge sycamore(depicted by Philip John Bainbridge in the 1840).  That forest is almost completely gone.  The only remnants of it remain in pockets throughout the farmland now located in this area.  Even then the larger, older trees have been all but wiped out entirely.
Imagine an ontario that still has these huge trees.  Think on how it would have shaped you as a child, seeing these giant powerful living things.  I can, and it fills me with fear to think that one day, without awareness and action, we could be living on land that has lost all of its woody plant heritage.  A land whose native trees are mere history topics to its inhabitants.
Do your earth a favour, plant a native tree.
